How to Clean Your Yoga Mat?
Learn the proper way to clean and disinfect your yoga mat to keep it fresh and hygienic....
Cleaning your yoga mat is one of those things everyone knows they should do… but often puts off.
You use it, roll it up, and tell yourself, “I’ll clean it next time.”
But over time, something builds up - sweat, dust, bacteria.
And at some point, you just feel it’s not the same.
After Practice - The Habit That Matters Most
The truth is, the biggest difference doesn’t come from deep cleaning, but from small, consistent habits.
After your session:
take a slightly damp cloth
wipe the areas where your hands and feet were
let the mat air dry
It takes less than a minute, but if you do it regularly, you’ll rarely need a full clean.
When You Decide to Clean It Properly
This is where most people overdo it.
You don’t need much:
lukewarm water
a soft cloth or sponge
maybe a very mild cleaner
The key is not to treat your mat like something that needs scrubbing.
A yoga mat isn’t a floor.
The Small Difference That Actually Matters
Not all mats react the same - and this is where a bit of awareness helps.
If it’s a cork mat:
you don’t need much at all. Cork doesn’t hold onto odors easily, and a simple wipe is usually enough.
If it’s a PU (smooth surface):
be careful with cleaning products - they can leave marks or change the texture. Less is better here.
If it’s a jute or textured mat:
water should be minimal. More moisture doesn’t mean cleaner - sometimes it does the opposite.
You don’t need strict rules - just don’t overdo it
What Actually Damages Your Mat
There are a few things that almost always cause problems:
harsh cleaning products
essential oils directly on the surface
hot water
aggressive scrubbing
They don’t make your mat cleaner.
They just make it wear out faster.
Drying Matters More Than You Think
This is the part most people underestimate.
After cleaning:
don’t roll it up immediately
let it dry completely
air drying is best, away from direct sunlight
If you store it even slightly damp - it will start to smell.
One Small Thing People Forget
Clean both sides.
The bottom collects dust from the floor, and over time that affects how your mat feels and grips.
Your mat doesn’t need to be perfectly clean.
But it should be cared for.
Because you feel the difference - in the grip, in the comfort, in the way your practice flows.
